Vacation 2016 - Nova Scotia Bound - Day 1

I am so fortunate! My Girl was able to take

vacation days during the same time as I. 

We packed the car, entered Geocaches in the GPS,

planned a route, grabbed cameras and phones

and hit the road. 

First Stop- Spinghill Miner's Museum where we took a tour of a mine

Springhill Miners’ Museum is located in Springhill (off Route 2) in the Fundy Shore and Annapolis Valley region. Tour the depths of a Springhill coal mine, famous in song and legend, with one of our knowledgeable guides. Hear stories of the disaster of 1891, the 1916 subterranean fire which raged through the galleries, the loss of 39 men in the 1956 explosion and the major “bump” in 1958 which killed 75 men. The Miners’ Museum displays unique artifacts of the history of the town and its remarkable industrial heritage

Before we headed in for our Guide Only Tour,  

we had to put our 'id tags' on the peg board.  

This was done

by all Miners in the day, 

 any miner's tag

still on the board was still in the hole. 

If at the end of a shift, there were tag(s) 

the others went searching.  

Once we came out, we removed our 'rain gear' and helmets

and picked up our tags.  We then proceeded to the main building 

to find out the history of our 'tag owners'.  You see,

each tag number represented Miner's that had mined here. 

Mine was Theodore Michniack Miner Number 969

Hers was Robert Perrin #544

I could do a whole Blog on this experience, 

maybe I will one day.  

Nearby we had seen this plaque before heading to the museum.

But, it's early in the day yet and we have so much

to explore.  

We made a stop in Parrsborough at the Fundy Geological Museum as well.

Come and explore Nova Scotia’s ancient past. In the Bay of Fundy the world’s highest tides erode the towering sea cliffs to reveal half a billion years of geological history, exposing fossils and local minerals, including amethyst and agate gem stones. 

We lunched at Masstown Market  then hit the road again. 

We stopped at Atlantic Canada's Oldest General Merchant Store 

Although we didn't know about it previous to our trip,we 

stumbled up on it.  Love that!  

We tried to visit the Lawrence House Museum

but it was Monday and they were closed.  

We geocached at 5 Island Lighthouse Park in Colchester.

Then onto Noel Museum in Hants County

Wow! These walls were hand painted using a peacock feather!

So many wonderful aritifacts and points of interest.

So glad, once again, that we both like to 'pop into places' along the way!

Then onto Burntcoat Lighthouse and Grand Pre - Grand-Pré National Historic Site to learn more about the Acadian settlement of Grand-Pré, the Expulsion and the Acadian memorials.  Visit the cemetery of the 17th/18th century Acadian village that became the scenic setting for Longfellow’s epic poem Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie.  Sadly, we got there too late, they were closed.

It's time to call it a night here in Windsor Nova Scotia.  A light supper and a day finished up with a refreshing swim.  Weather - HOT  Humidity making it 37.
